Otar Shamugia: "The goal of the new law is to create solid legal foundations for the protection of biological diversity".
Following today's government meeting, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, addressed the media about the new draft law ''On Biological Diversity''.

According to the Minister, the purpose of the Law ''On Biological Diversity'' is to create solid legal foundations for the protection of biological diversity. The new law should ensure the use of biodiversity components and quantity in a way to avoid a decrease in the long run.

"Within the framework of the Association Agreement, we have made an obligation on the adoption of the mentioned law. The adoption of the Law on Biological Diversity will be another step forward towards legislative convergence with the European Union.Â
In the environmental direction, significant regulations were adopted this year regarding the laws on ''Industrial Emissions'' and ''Water Resources Management''. Overall, we have already approximated 20 of the 27 environmental regulations that we were required," said Mr. Otar Shamugia.

The Minister explained that after adopting the law, very active work on the bylaws will begin in several directions to determine specific indicators and specific criteria for each issue regarding the strictly protected and protected species, the necessary criteria for their removal from the environment.
Accordingly, the Ministry, agencies, and businesses require certain timelines to prepare for implementing the relevant regulations. The main part of the law will enter into force from 2026, and certain norms will enter into force in 2027-2029", - noted the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.Â
