Otar Shamugia: "Important measures have been taken in the food safety, veterinary care, and plant protection fields in recent years. The legislative base has been improved, and technical and human resources have expanded, as evidenced by the European Commission's report, which positively evaluates the reforms implemented in the food safety field".

" Increasing capacities led to increased state control over food safety and improved efficiency. In 2023, this figure will be more than 32,000", said Mr. Otar Shamugia, the candidate for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, at the joint session of the committees at the Parliament.

According to Mr. Shamugia, the National Food Agency will continue free vaccination of animals and plant protection measures, for which appropriate funding has been allocated in the 2024 budget. Moreover, laboratory capacities are expanding, and international research methods are being introduced in the country. More than 40 new research methods are expected to be adopted by 2024, with 19 focusing on fish diseases.

The candidate for the position of Minister also emphasized the importance of developing a unified database of land resources, noting that this year, for the first time, a unified balance of the land fund of Georgia will become available. However, despite the implemented measures, low productivity, a lack of access to modern technologies, and a scarcity of qualified personnel continue to be challenges the Ministry is actively striving to address.
