The Coordinating Council of the National Biodiversity Monitoring System holds the first meeting.

The First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, delivered opening remarks at the first meeting of the Coordinating Council of the National Biodiversity Monitoring System.

 

Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili emphasized the importance of preserving, conserving, and monitoring biodiversity in the country and thanked the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF), and the Swedish government (SIDA) for supporting the mentioned direction.

 

" One of the key directions of the Association Agreement with the European Union is to enhance the country's biodiversity monitoring. I am glad to see that the process of updating the National Biodiversity Monitoring System has entered an active phase. A strong monitoring system is the cornerstone for safeguarding and preserving biodiversity. I believe that with the efficient work of the coordination council, we will be able to create a transparent system based on European principles", said the First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili.
According to the Executive Director of the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF), Mrs. Elizabeth Messud, the effort to enhance Georgia's national biodiversity monitoring system for biodiversity protection is an essential step forward. The Caucasus Nature Fund is ready to continue supporting the mentioned process.

 

During the meeting, the members of the coordination council elected the zoologist and professor, Mr. Zurab Gurielidze, as the Chairman of the Coordination Council of the National Biodiversity Monitoring System.

 

Within the framework of the event, the representatives of the member organizations of the Coordination Council delivered presentations about the implemented and planned projects regarding biodiversity monitoring. The parties also discussed issues regarding developing a research-monitoring methodology for individual species, updating the national indicators of the biodiversity monitoring system, and forming a working group to create an electronic platform.

As mentioned, the Biodiversity Monitoring Division was formed in the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture's Department of Biodiversity and Forestry to develop an effective National Biodiversity Monitoring System.

The representatives of member organizations of the council and persons interested in the mentioned issue attended the meeting.
