" Georgian Amelioration " completed the water supply-related works for Kumisi Lake, which is on the verge of drying up.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, and the State Representative of the Kvemo Kartli region, Mr. Giorgi Dokhturishvili, got acquainted with the results of the completed works on Kumisi Lake.

It is worth mentioning that reducing the wastewater threatened to dry up Kumisi Lake, posing a significant threat to biodiversity and ecology.

Kumisi Lake is located in the Gardabani Municipality, at 470 meters above sea level, and is one of the important wetlands for wintering and migratory birds, which use this ecosystem for food and as a resting place during migration season. In this regard, Kumisi Lake is a unique place. Within the scope of the operations carried out by the Georgian Amelioration, the most essential step for protecting biodiversity was supplying Kumisi Lake with water. We will take necessary actions in all situations where there is a possibility to fill lakes at risk of drying up and save them," said Otar Shamugia.

The works carried out in the village of Akhali Kumisi resulted in collecting the natural runoff water in the cleaned channels and sending it directly to Kumisi Lake. As part of the operations, up to 2 kilometres of canals were cut and cleaned in two directions. As a consequence, the water from swampy areas first flows into the collectors and then into the lake.

The performed works ensured the inflow of an additional 2.5 million m3 of water into Kumisi Lake, which increased the total volume of water to 7 million m3.

As a result of the implemented works, the water level in the lake has increased and the ecological situation has significantly improved.
