Otar Shamugia: "The European Union officially recognized the fishing certificates issued by the relevant state Agencies of Georgia".

During the presentation of the 2023 report, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, emphasized the country’s potential for aquaculture and animal husbandry and the current support projects.

According to the Minister, aquaculture has the highest development potential. Last year, appropriate zones were approved for establishing marine aquaculture farms in 8 locations along the coastline of Adjara, Samegrelo, and Guria regions, which shows the opportunity of attracting huge investments in the aquaculture sector and the possibility of producing tens of thousands of tonnes of fish and various types of seafood and, gradually, exploiting the export potential of hundreds of millions of dollars.

"The National Environmental Agency, in cooperation with other services, is actively working to develop permit conditions for several locations, and shortly we plan to announce auctions that will allow businesses to make large-scale investments in this direction, which will also contribute to the development of inland water aquaculture," Mr Otar Shamugia said.

According to the Minister, as a result of the reforms carried out by the Ministry in this direction, on April 2, 2024, the European Union officially recognized the fishing certificates issued by the relevant state agencies of Georgia.

This recognition is crucial for Georgian entrepreneurs since it allows them to export Black Sea fish and fishery products from Georgia to the European Union market, which will significantly contribute to the development of the economic system in Georgia.
