Otar Shamugia: "Over 5000 hectares of forest area have undergone forest restoration measures during the past few years. Until 2030, the forest restoration /planting works will be carried out on at least 20,000 ha of area".

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, emphasized the importance of forestry sector reform while presenting the 2023 report of the Ministry at the Parliament of Georgia.

" We have taken a significant step in the forestry sector by adopting the Forest Code of Georgia. Setting up "business yards" is actively underway throughout all regions, and the country already has a legislative framework complying with European standards to ensure the sustainable use of wood resources, including ensuring firewood for heating purposes to the population. Fifty-four business yards have been set up, enabling residents to purchase different types of wood resources. "Business yards’’ will operate in all municipalities and significantly contribute to reducing unsystematic logging and adopting sustainable forest management practices," said Mr. Otar Shamugia.

According to the Minister, forest maintenance/restoration measures are a top priority in the country. Over the past few years, forest restoration measures have been implemented in ​​more than 5000 ha of area. The scale of the mentioned activity is annually expanding. According to the long-term plan, until 2030, the forest restoration/planting works will be carried out on ​​at least 20,000 ha of area.
