Marneuli Municipality hosted the wheat seed selection and demonstration event.
The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Yuri Nozadze, attended the "Lomtagora 2024" open-door event to select and demonstrate wheat varieties, one of the strategic products in Georgia.During the event, the director of "Firma Lomtagora" LLC, Kakha Lashkhi, briefed the visitors on the modern technologies for wheat farming, current challenges, and ongoing activities.
On the company's test demonstration plot, industry representatives and experts inspected endemic Georgian wheat types, ancient local varieties, and up to 120 promising wheat varieties brought from international nurseries and wheat seed nurseries listed in the national catalogue.
At the Lomtagora demonstration plots, the experts tested the adaptation of plants to soil and climatic conditions, disease resistance, and factors determining high yields in promising varieties picked from international nurseries.
The field specialists discussed issues regarding the registration of new varieties in Georgia- obtained from wheat variety testing.
" There is an urgent need to provide scientific support to the industry to boost cereal crop development. It is essential to test the selective new varieties introduced by international organizations, regionalize, and distribute them on farms.
Supplying quality wheat seed material grown on-site is a top priority for Georgian farmers. For over 30 years, the company Lomtagora has successfully carried out wheat and maize selection-seeding and production of field crops on the market in close collaboration with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and donor organizations", - noted the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Yuri Nozadze.
During the visit, guests visited the grain storage facility equipped with cutting-edge technologies and the company's seed processing and cleaning unit, established in 2013 through cheap credit.
Mr.Gela Samkharauli, Chair of the AgrarianIssues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. Beyhan Akin, International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center | CIMMYT, the representatives of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Scientific Research Center, Kobuleti Institute of Genetics and Immunology, local self-government body and farmers attended the event.
