Georgia stands as a regional leader in implementing sustainable agriculture goals.

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Tengiz Nasaridze, delivered opening remarks at the final meeting of the project "Generating Economic and Environmental Benefits from Sustainable Land Management for Vulnerable Rural Communities of Georgia”.

The six-year project aimed to create a favorable environment at the municipal level in Sagarejo, Kvareli, Kareli, and Gori to achieve the national goal of maintaining a neutral balance in land degradation.
The project focuses on improving ecosystems, strengthening sustainable land management practices, and implementing pilot actions for soil restoration, including knowledge management and capacity building.

‘’This project is an excellent example of effective and coordinated cooperation. Achieving a neutral balance in land degradation is an agenda for the Ministry, and the project significantly contributed to that goal. Its importance is heightened in the context of climate change. Additionally, we must collaborate to further develop sustainable land management practices to protect the natural capital of Georgia, " stated Mr. Tengiz Nasaridze.

The Deputy Minister thanked the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and the Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) for implementing the project.

"Georgia is a regional leader in implementing sustainable agriculture goals. I believe this initiative will significantly contribute to achieving sustainable land management objectives," said Mr. Johan Robinson, Senior Programme Officer for the UN Environment-Global Environment Facility's Biodiversity and Land Degradation portfolios, while attending the meeting remotely.

During the meeting, the parties emphasized the importance of planting windbreaks, practicing crop rotation, and adopting zero tillage technology as part of the project.

Representatives of relevant Departments of the Ministry, farmers, and stakeholders attended the event.
