Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, the First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, participated in the Preparatory Ministerial Meeting for the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Pre-COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Â
The high-level political meeting aimed to advance discussions across all pillars of the Paris Agreement and identify solutions to be presented at COP29. A primary focus of COP29 will be the development of an ambitious financial mobilization plan, calling on developed countries to provide funds to support developing nations in implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
Â
In her address, Mrs. Tandilashvili outlined Georgia's priorities for COP29, emphasizing the critical need for global financial mobilization to combat climate change.
She highlighted the importance of public funding not only for adaptation measures but also for mitigating the effects of climate change and compensating local communities and the public sector for losses and damages incurred.
Â
"In Georgia, we recognize the importance of enhancing community resilience to climate change, particularly in vulnerable regions. Therefore, we advocate for expanded support for ongoing adaptation initiatives, including increased financing and technology transfer, enabling local governments and communities to effectively respond to climate change challenges," said Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili.
Â
The meeting brought together ministers and high-level representatives from over 40 countries, including the European Commissioner for Climate Action.
For the first time in the history of the South Caucasus region, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will take place in Azerbaijan.Â
