UNECE Deputy Executive Secretary Dmitry Mariyasin: “Georgia is one of the leading and active countries in fulfilling its environmental obligations.”

During the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr. Otar Shamugia, met with Dmitry Mariyasin, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), at the Georgian Pavilion.

 

The parties highlighted Georgia's notable progress in the field of environmental protection. 

 

Mr. Shamugia thanked the UNECE Deputy Executive Secretary for his support, while Mr. Mariyasin praised Georgia's commitment and achievements.

 

“Georgia is one of the leading and active countries in fulfilling its environmental obligations. The country is deeply involved in the processes and agreements of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and has made significant progress in implementing UNECE recommendations,” said Mr Mariyasin.

 

During the meeting, Mr Shamugia outlined the Georgian Government’s initiatives to enhance environmental protection, including installing monitoring systems to combat air pollution, reforms aimed at reducing industrial emissions, improved water resource management, and strengthened environmental control mechanisms.
Particular focus was placed on two recently adopted laws—“Water Resources Management” and “Industrial Emissions”. Mr Shamugia emphasized that both laws fully align with European standards, ensuring the reduction of environmental pollution and the sustainable management of natural resources.

 

The UNECE Deputy Executive Secretary confirmed his full support for Georgia in implementing environmental measures, acknowledging the country’s active efforts to align with international environmental commitments.

 

The  First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Ms. Nino Tandilashvili, accompanied the Minister.
