Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation Signed Between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the Ministry of Agriculture of Hungary.
The signing ceremony took place during an official visit to Hungary by a Georgian Government Delegation led by Prime Minister Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze. The Delegation included Mr. David Songulashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
During his official visit to Budapest, Minister Songulashvili held a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Minister of Agriculture Mr. István Nagy, where they signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
“I would like to emphasize that through our cooperation with Hungary, we are already achieving tangible results. In particular, Hungary’s support for Georgia’s approximation to EU legislation is invaluable. We are pleased that, with the assistance of a Hungarian expert, Georgia will receive significant support in meeting EU requirements related to agriculture and rural development,” stated Mr. David Songulashvili.
During the meeting, the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at deepening the strategic partnership and promoting practical cooperation between the two countries in the field of agriculture. The two counterpart Ministers expressed their readiness to continue active collaboration aimed at fostering sustainable and inclusive development of the agricultural sector.
“Today’s meeting reaffirms the strategic partnership between our countries and strengthens our friendship. The Memorandum we signed today marks a new stage in Georgian-Hungarian cooperation. It reflects our shared vision and firm commitment to addressing existing challenges through concrete steps and joint efforts,” added Minister Songulashvili.
Mr. Songulashvili emphasized the importance of knowledge and experience sharing, with a focus on student and academic staff exchange programs.
“Strengthening the expertise of Georgian professionals will be crucial for the development of our sector. The success of any industry depends on the quality and capabilities of its human resources. I hope that concrete measures will be taken to facilitate access to Hungarian educational programs for students and experts from Georgia,” stated the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.
As stated by Minister Songulashvili, the conversation touched upon forest management, a key priority for Georgia and Hungary, emphasizing that sharing experience in the mentioned area is a clear priority.
The Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the two countries envisages sharing experience in a range of areas, including the recognition, management, and protection of Designations of Origin (DOs) and Geographical Indications (GIs).
Notably, Hungary’s expertise in promoting Hungarikum—traditional Hungarian products—is particularly valuable.
The Agreement also addresses the management of state programs in agriculture and food systems, transfer of agricultural knowledge and information, promotion of Georgian students’ participation in Hungarian agricultural education, enhanced scientific research cooperation, and development of partnerships in grain crops and seed production.
