David Songulashvili: "The process of adopting purification systems is actively underway in enterprises, which will minimize the harmful impact on the environment."

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. David Songulashvili, visited JSC “Rustavis Azoti”- the only producer of mineral fertilizers in the country. The company exports products mostly to around 15 countries in the European Union, South America, Asia, and Africa.

During his visit to the largest enterprise for fertilizers and industrial chemicals, the Minister was briefed on the production process and the results of technological upgrades carried out in recent years. He toured the workshops, the new wastewater treatment plant, and the condensing power station and received information about the modern technologies that the enterprise has introduced to minimize its harmful environmental impact.

Notably, Rustavi Azoti operates under the conditions established by the environmental resolution issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. Since 2022, the enterprise has been integrated into the electronic system for continuous instrumental self-monitoring of emissions (air monitoring). The air monitoring system allows the Environmental Supervision Department to continuously track and assess the company’s emissions, ensuring real-time compliance with environmental regulations.

“Improving air quality, especially in industrial zones, is one of the top priorities for the Government of Georgia. Notably, in recent years, the collaboration between the state and major enterprises, along with the relevant new legislation, has led to tangible results. The process of implementing modern technologies and purification systems is actively underway in enterprises, which will significantly reduce the harmful impact on the environment,” stated Mr. David Songulashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

According to Mr. Levan Jgharkava, Head of the Environmental Supervision Department, “Rustavi Azoti” is a prime example of how large-scale industrial production can coexist with environmental care.

“As a result of stricter regulations, measures implemented by the Ministry in recent years, and regular monitoring by the Environmental Supervision Department, 15 enterprises operating in Rustavi are now integrated into the electronic self-monitoring emissions system. This ensures the prevention and reduction of environmental pollution from the industrial sector, ” stated Mr. Jgharkava.

It is worth noting that the process of implementing a continuous self-monitoring system for harmful substance emissions into the air is actively underway to prevent pollution from enterprises. The system has already been implemented at 36 of the largest enterprises across the country.

Accompanying the Minister on his visit were Deputy Minister Mr. Kakha Kakabadze, State Representative of Kvemo Kartli Region, Mr. Levan Kharabadze, and Rustavi Mayor, Mrs. Nino Latsabidze.
