David Songulashvili: " Currently, irrigation water is being supplied uninterrupted to 165,000 hectares of land nationwide, and this figure is gradually increasing."


The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. David Songulashvili, visited the Marneuli Municipality to oversee the rehabilitation work on the Main Canal of the Khrami Irrigation System.

 

" Uninterrupted access to irrigation water is vital for farmers to ensure the efficient and sustainable use of agricultural land in eastern Georgia.
The Government is undertaking large-scale projects to establish a robust and efficient irrigation infrastructure. As a result, irrigation water is currently supplied uninterrupted to 165,000 hectares of land across the country, with this figure gradually increasing. I would also like to mention that work is actively underway on a program aimed at improving communication with water users and enhancing service mechanisms," stated Mr. Songulashvili.

 

LTD "Georgian Amelioration carries out the rehabilitation work on the Main Canal of the Khrami irrigation system. The restored irrigation system will benefit 12 villages in the Bolnisi and Marneuli municipalities: Tsurtavi, Farizi, Qizilajlo, Tamarisi, Tsereteli, Sabirkendi, Algeti viticulture, Keshalo, Ambarovka, as well as the areas surrounding the city of Marneuli and industrial facilities.

 

The completed work will improve water supply across 4,075 hectares of agricultural land in the region, significantly increasing the potential for higher-quality yields. The project, valued at GEL 4.7 million, is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

 

Currently, there are four ongoing rehabilitation projects for irrigation infrastructure in the Kvemo Kartli region. Upon completion, the supply of irrigation water will be improved across approximately 10,065 hectares of agricultural land.

 

The Deputy Minister, Mr. Kaha Kakabadze, the State Representative in the Kvemo Kartli region, Mr. Levan Kharabadze, the Mayor of Marneuli Municipality, Mr. Kenan Omarov, the Chairman of the Marneuli City Council, Mr. Amiran Giorgadze, and the General Director of LTD "Georgian Amelioration," Mr. Gigla Tamazashvili, accompanied the Minister.
