Shalva Papuashvili and David Songulashvili Meet Wheat Farmers in Dedoplistskaro Municipality
The Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. Shalva Papuashvili, and the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. David Songulashvili, met with wheat farmers in Dedoplistskaro at a wheat and barley storage facility to discuss the progress of the harvest season.
“I wish you an abundant and high-quality harvest. Your hard work is a key factor in this success, and the results are already visible. Together with Minister David Songulashvili, we came here today to listen to you, to better understand what kind of support the government can provide, and what needs and challenges you are facing. The state remains committed to supporting farmers and entrepreneurs so that your efforts are duly recognised, and we can continue making progress together,” said the Chairman of Parliament.
During the meeting, Minister David Songulashvili emphasised the importance of timely harvesting and proper storage of crops. According to the Minister, an operational coordination centre has been established to ensure the smooth functioning of the logistics chain throughout the harvest season.
The Minister also highlighted state programs aimed at supporting wheat farmers and promoting the development of the agricultural sector. As mentioned, between 2020 and 2024, under the State Co-financing Program for Agricultural Machinery (specifically for harvesting equipment), investments totalling GEL 78.5 million were invested in agricultural machinery, of which the state contributed GEL 27.5 million.
This year, around 300 combine harvesters are involved in the wheat harvesting process, the majority of which were purchased with government support.
The wheat farmers welcomed the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s initiative to establish a coordination centre to ensure an organised and efficient harvest season.
During the meeting, the farmers shared current challenges with the Minister, noting that their primary concerns are the quality of the harvest and securing sufficient income—especially in light of current market prices—to cover production costs.
The meeting with wheat farmers took place in the village of Samreklo, Dedoplistskaro Municipality, at the wheat and barley storage facility owned by Zurab Tevzadze. The entrepreneur is a beneficiary of the Rural Development Agency and has received support through the Preferential Agrocredit Project, both for cultivating grain crops and for purchasing agricultural machinery. The agro-loan amounted to GEL 900,000.
The Members of Parliament, the State Representative of Kakheti Region, Mr. Giorgi Aladashvili, the Director of the Rural Development Agency, Mr. Giorgi Darchia, representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, and members of the local self-government, attended the meeting.
