David Songulashvili Meets the Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate and Environmental Transition of Belgium, Jean-Luc Crucke
As part of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in the Republic of Kenya, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. David Songulashvili, held a meeting with the Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate and Environmental Transition of Belgium, Mr. Jean-Luc Crucke.During the meeting, the parties discussed ways to enhance resilience to climate change and further deepen bilateral cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
According to Minister Songulashvili, environmental protection is one of the top priorities of the Government of Georgia. In recent years, budgetary funding has significantly increased, institutional capacities have been enhanced, and this progress has contributed to alignment with international standards and the strengthening of environmental legislation.
The Minister provided a detailed overview of Georgia’s environmental reforms and progress, including: the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47% by 2030, the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, the development of early warning systems, and support for the circular economy.
Special emphasis was placed on EU–Georgia cooperation. As mentioned, 21 out of the 27 environmental directives stipulated by the Association Agreement have already been integrated into national legislation, while the remaining six are set to be fully incorporated by the end of 2028.
The sides expressed readiness to enhance cooperation in waste management, climate change, biodiversity protection, and technical assistance. At the end of the meeting, Mr. Songulashvili invited the Belgian Minister to pay an official visit to Georgia.
The First Deputy Minister, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mr. Gia Macharadze, attended the meeting.
