Meeting the Manufacturers to Discuss the Regulation of Plastic Bags

The First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, along with the Deputies of the Minister, Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili and Mr. Zurab Ezugbaia, met with plastic bag manufacturers to discuss regulatory issues related to plastic bags.

According to Deputy Minister Mr.  Pavliashvili, pollution caused by plastic waste, including plastic bags, represents one of the most significant environmental challenges, underscoring the need for comprehensive and effective measures.

As mentioned by the Deputy Minister, the state has launched a Plastic Use Reduction Reform, which is being implemented in several phases.

“We make decisions through cooperation and consultations with the relevant business sectors. It is also important to note that we have international commitments and we are members of the High Ambition Coalition and the Zero Waste Initiative, which place responsibility on us to minimize the use of plastics, particularly in relation to food. I hope that through coordinated cooperation we will develop solutions that are acceptable for businesses and enforceable for the state,” said Mr. Pavliashvilli.

As mentioned, the working meetings in this direction will continue in the future.

Notably, as part of the Plastic Consumption Reduction Reform, a regulation will come into force on January 1, 2026, prohibiting the use of certain plastic items intended for direct contact with food.
