From October 1, 2018, the production, import and sale of plastic bags with thicknesses less than 15 microns will be banned aiming to reduce the environmental pollution

The use of plastic bags is a global scale problem. The application of plastics as packaging materials has significantly increased all over the world, including Georgia. This fact poses a significant problem to the environment, which is mostly polluted by plastics, especially plastic disposable bags.
It is worth noting, that plastic bag is not a subject to biological degradation due to its chemical composition and even more, plastic items can take more than 100 years to decompose in landfills. Plastic bags for single use are turned into a waste, that eventually pollute an environment (soil / water). Accordingly, the scale of the problem is constantly growing along with the increasing consumption of plastic products. Moreover, complete recycling of plastic waste is a lot more complicated and also impossible.
Under the frame of the new environmental policy, the Government of Georgia sets goals to reduce an environmental pollution by means of encouraging new, ecologically pure initiatives, therefore Georgian government has adopted a new regulation according to which:
From October 1, 2018 to reduce the environmental pollution, the production, import and sale of plastic bags with thicknesses less than 15 microns will be banned.
From April 1, 2019, manufacturing, import and sale of plastic bags of any thickness will be prohibited. The new regulation in turn encourages the production, import and sale of biodegradable and compostable bags.
