David Songulashvili discusses the New State Subsidy Scheme and Irrigation Tariffs

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. David Songulashvili, held a working meeting with the high-ranking officials, including the First Deputy Minister of Regional Development, Mr. Levan Zautashvili, and the Director General of Georgian Amelioration LLC, Mr. Gigla Tamazashvili, as well as the state representatives from various regions and municipal mayors.

During the meeting, the parties focused on the irrigation water tariffs established by the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), including a new state subsidy scheme aimed at supporting farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector.

The participants held in-depth discussions on the effective implementation of the aforementioned mechanisms and on enhancing their accessibility for farmers.

“The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is implementing reforms across multiple areas. It is essential to engage in ongoing dialogue with regional and municipal leaders. Therefore, we gradually hold  regional meetings. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Regional Development of Georgia for organizing such an effective and collaborative format. Moreover, it is crucial that every reform we adopt is fully aligned with the specific needs of municipalities and regions. These reforms are directly informed by the concerns and priorities raised during our meetings with the local population. Our responses and policy decisions have been shaped precisely through the consolidation of these insights,” stated Mr. David Songulashvili.

During the meeting, the parties also addressed key issues related to the upcoming irrigation season, including infrastructure readiness, water resource management, and ensuring an uninterrupted water supply across regions. Particular attention was given to the challenges that persist in the melioration system and require a timely and effective response.

The importance of effective coordination between central and local authorities was underscored as a key driver in advancing the agricultural sector, safeguarding farmers’ interests, and promoting regional economic growth. As mentioned, similar working meetings will facilitate the effective planning and implementation of specific projects.

The Deputies of the Minister, Mr. Giorgi Tskrialashvili and Mr. Lasha Dolidze, the Head of the National Forestry Agency of Georgia, Mr.  Besik Amiranashvili, the Head of the Environmental Supervision Department, Mr.  Levan Jgharkava, and the Director of the Rural Development Agency of Georgia, Mr. Zurab Gozalishvili, attended the meeting.
