David Songulashvili: “One of the key strengths of the agricultural program and reform is the enhancement of the monitoring system.”

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr David Songulashvili, spoke about the state's vision for agricultural development and the large-scale reform supporting the agricultural sector.

According to the Minister, one of the key strengths of the reform is the enhancement of the monitoring system, which ensures more efficient and successful implementation of individual projects.

“One of the key strengths of this program and reform is, in fact, the strengthening of the monitoring system. We have often seen cases where farmers start planting orchards or implementing other projects and later encounter difficulties. Monitoring systems ensure that such challenges are identified and addressed in a timely manner,” said Mr David Songulashvili.

The Minister also spoke about priority areas in the agricultural sector, noting that particular attention is being given to fields requiring additional support.

He emphasised that one of the key directions is improving access to knowledge and developing extension services, which provide farmers with expert assistance and advisory support.

“If we want to produce high-quality, competitive products, it is essential to implement a consistent policy. This means that farmers must have access to knowledge, modern technologies, and mechanisation. These are the key areas we are focusing on,” the Minister noted.

In addition, he stressed the importance of developing mechanisation and introducing modern technologies, which directly contribute to improving product quality and overall sector efficiency. Particular attention is also being given to priority areas of food security, where farming plays a central role.

He further noted that aquaculture and mariculture are promising emerging sectors. At present, approximately 85% of products in this segment are imported, indicating significant potential for developing domestic production.

The Minister concluded that these comprehensive and targeted reforms will lay the foundation for a new stage of agricultural development in Georgia, enabling the country to produce high-quality, competitive products.
