David Songulashvili Participates in Conference in Baku: “Modern Agricultural Cooperation as the Foundation for Sustainable Development and a Guarantee of Food Security”

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr David Songulashvili, took part in the conference “Modern Agricultural Cooperation as the Foundation for Sustainable Development and a Guarantee of Food Security” in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The keynote speakers included the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr David Songulashvili, the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Majnun Mammadov, the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr Ibrohim Abdurakhmanov, and the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr İbrahim Yumaklı.

In his remarks, Mr Songulashvili emphasised the importance of climate risk management, regional cooperation, and ongoing reforms in the agricultural sector, aiming to ensure sustainable agricultural development and long-term food security.

“Today, agriculture is facing one of the most pressing global challenges, climate change, which directly affects both production and the well-being of rural populations. Accordingly, our approach must be systemic and based on a long-term vision. We aim to build a modern, efficient, and climate-resilient agricultural sector that simultaneously strengthens farmers’ resilience, reduces the impact of climate risks, and expands economic opportunities in rural areas.

At the same time, regional cooperation is crucial, as no country can address climate change and food security challenges alone. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen coordinated cooperation among the countries of the Caucasus, the Black Sea, and the Caspian regions. Moreover, Georgia, as a connecting link between Europe and Asia, plays an important role in regional trade and logistics processes. The Middle Corridor creates opportunities for the efficient movement of agricultural products, further strengthening our regional cooperation,” said Mr David Songulashvili.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of Georgia’s climate-smart agricultural policy and ongoing reforms. According to him, Georgia is actively investing in the development of irrigation infrastructure and the improvement of land management, while simultaneously implementing a systemic reform of water resource management based on modern technologies and monitoring mechanisms.

“Our policy aims to build a modern and efficient agricultural sector that both protects natural resources and increases productivity and strengthens the economic opportunities of rural communities. In this way, we seek to reduce the impact of climate risks and ensure the country’s long-term food security,” Mr Songulashvili noted.

The conference “Modern Agricultural Cooperation as the Foundation for Sustainable Development and a Guarantee of Food Security” was held within the framework of the international agricultural exhibition CASPIAN AGRO 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
