David Songulashvili participated in the 93rd General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health in Paris

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr David Songulashvili, participated in the 93rd General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health in Paris.

During his remarks at the Ministerial segment, the Minister underscored the importance of enhancing resilient veterinary systems worldwide.

“Today, we all clearly understand that strong veterinary systems protect food production, safeguard public welfare, strengthen food security, facilitate trade, and reduce risks to human health. In today’s interconnected world, weaknesses in the veterinary system of one country can rapidly evolve into a regional or even global threat. Therefore, Georgia is investing substantial resources to ensure that prevention, surveillance, and laboratory capacities are fully operational and effective nationwide. This approach helps us avoid significantly greater costs associated with epidemics, economic losses, trade disruptions, and public health crises,” stated Mr David Songulashvili.

According to the Minister, for countries seeking to increase agri-food exports and strengthen regional and international trade relations, investment in veterinary systems represents a fundamental prerequisite for economic growth, market access, and long-term competitiveness.

“No veterinary system can function effectively without qualified professionals. Around the world, we are witnessing a shortage of veterinarians and a declining interest among young people in pursuing this profession. Consequently, strengthening veterinary education and professional development has become particularly important. In this regard, the support of the World Organisation for Animal Health is highly valuable. With the Organization’s involvement, numerous initiatives have been implemented in our country, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this support. WOAH also plays a crucial role in the cooperation through which Georgia continues to introduce high international standards and reinforce its role as a reliable international partner,” the Minister noted.

Alongside Minister Songulashvili, the 93rd General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health in Paris was attended by the Deputy Minister, Mr Lasha Avaliani; the Head of the National Food Agency of Georgia, Mr Giorgi Iakobashvili; and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the French Republic, Mr Irakli Kurashvili.
