David Songulashvili Meets with the Potato Farmers and Exporters

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr David Songulashvili, met with potato farmers and exporters.

During the meeting, farmers discussed the sector's existing challenges and prospects for further development.

The Minister announced an initiative to establish a Sectoral Council to support and coordinate progress within the sector.

“Potatoes are among the products in high demand both on the domestic and international markets; therefore, it is important to support increased production and the development of the sector. This is precisely why the relevant council was established, creating a platform for active communication with sector representatives, discussing existing challenges, and identifying mechanisms that will maximally support the development of the sector and the production of competitive products,” stated Mr David Songulashvili.

The discussions also focused on the rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure, improving access to appropriate agricultural machinery, and adapting support programs to more effectively respond to the sector’s real needs and challenges.

As mentioned, the Council meetings will be convened monthly under the supervision of the Deputy Minister, while quarterly meetings will be chaired by the Minister. This format will strengthen communication with sector representatives, promote greater consideration of farmers’ interests, and contribute to the effective planning of sector development initiatives.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister, Mr Zurab Ezugbaia, as well as Heads of the relevant Agencies and Departments of the Ministry.
