The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr. David Songulashvili, met with small-scale livestock farmers and exporters.During the meeting, the parties focused on the current challenges facing the sector and prospects for its further development.
“The development of the small ruminant livestock sector is one of the Government’s key priorities. We have decided to establish a sectoral council to ensure timely responses to the sectoral needs and enhance effective management. Moreover, It is important that, through continuous communication with sector representatives, we define mechanisms that will facilitate the sustainable development of the industry,” stated Mr. Songulashvili.
The discussion also focused on access to migratory routes and pastures, the importance of breed selection, and the need to adapt state support programmes to better address the sector’s specific needs and existing challenges.
Notably, the council meetings will be held on a monthly basis under the supervision of the Deputy Minister, while the Minister himself will chair the meetings once every quarter. This format will foster active engagement with sector representatives, ensure broader consideration of farmers’ interests, and facilitate the effective planning of sector development initiatives.
