David Songulashvili: “Through state support, we are creating the necessary conditions to make the Georgian agricultural sector more responsive to market demands”
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr. David Songulashvili, visited AgroKartli LTD, an agricultural enterprise developed with the support of state agricultural programs, in the village of Dzevera, Gori Municipality, and reviewed the production process.
The Minister toured the company’s perennial orchards and its 500-tonne-capacity fruit cold storage facility.He was briefed on the company's operations, production processes, and the marketing channels for its locally produced agricultural products.
“It is essential to ensure that farmers are able not only to produce high-quality crops, but also to preserve them properly and sell them under better market conditions. Therefore, alongside the development of perennial orchards, it is crucial to strengthen modern storage infrastructure. This is a significant step towards increasing farmers’ incomes, reducing losses, and making Georgian products more competitive. With the state support, we are creating the necessary conditions to ensure that the Georgian agricultural sector is better equipped to meet market demands,” said Mr. David Songulashvili.
AgroKartli LTD is a beneficiary of state agricultural programs. In 2017, within the framework of the state co-financing program “Plant the Future”, the company purchased apple and cherry seedlings and began developing perennial orchards.
Today, the farm includes 7 hectares of apple orchards, 5 hectares of peach orchards, 3 hectares of cherry orchards, and 2.5 hectares of vineyards. The company also operates a fruit cold storage facility with a capacity of 500 tonnes.
Last year, AgroKartli LTD harvested 250 tonnes of apples, 20 tonnes of cherries, and 20 tonnes of grapes. The company’s products are sold both on the domestic market and exported internationally.
The enterprise provides seasonal employment for up to 70 people.
The Governor of the Shida Kartli region, State Representative, Mr. Simon Guledani, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Lasha Avaliani, Head of the National Food Agency, Mr. Giorgi Iakobashvili, and representatives of local authorities accompanied the Minister.
