David Songulashvili: “It is essential to increase the production of Georgian wheat while preserving indigenous varieties”

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr David Songulashvili, along with Kvemo Kartli State Representative, Mr Ilia Jalaghaniya, visited Lomtagora in Marneuli Municipality, where state officials learned about the agricultural operations and met with wheat-growing farmers.

The Minister toured the agricultural fields and became familiar with ongoing work in wheat production and breeding, including testing and development of Georgian wheat varieties.

“It is of particular importance not only to increase wheat production, but also to preserve and study Georgian varieties and develop new varieties adapted to modern challenges. Today, at Lomtagora, we have the opportunity to see first-hand the work being carried out in wheat breeding and production. The experience and established practices of such farms are significant for increasing local production and strengthening the competitiveness of Georgia’s agricultural sector.

Our objective is to increase both the volume and quality of domestically produced agricultural products, provide farmers and agribusinesses with greater development opportunities, and, at the same time, strengthen the country’s food security,” said Mr David Songulashvili.

One of Lomtagora’s key areas of activity is wheat breeding and the testing of new varieties. To this end, the company has been conducting breeding and demonstration activities and testing modern agricultural technologies for many years.

Grain processing is another important component of the company’s operations. The facility is equipped with stone mills and produces various types of flour from Georgian wheat and corn.

The Deputies of the Minister, Mr Giorgi Tskrialashvili and Mr Lasha Avaliani; the Head of the National Food Agency, Mr Giorgi Iakobashvili; and the Mayor of Marneuli Municipality, Mr Dauri Ismailov, accompanied the Minister.
