David Songulashvili: “Our goal is to ensure a coordinated process and gradually improve waste management infrastructure''

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr David Songulashvili, held a working meeting with Mr Platon Kalmakhelidze, State Representative in the Kakheti region, and the mayors of the region’s municipalities to discuss the condition of existing landfills in Kakheti and the development of waste management infrastructure.

The parties focused on planned measures to rehabilitate landfills currently operating in the region, establish a new regional waste disposal facility, and further develop waste management infrastructure.

“Improving waste management infrastructure and establishing a system that meets modern standards is one of the key priorities of our environmental policy. In this process, we place particular importance on gradually rehabilitating existing landfills across the regions and developing new facilities that meet modern standards. During the meeting with representatives of the Kakheti municipalities, we discussed rehabilitating existing landfills and plans to establish new regional facilities. Our goal is to ensure that the process is coordinated and that waste management infrastructure is gradually improved,” stated Mr David Songulashvili.

Moreover, of the five landfills currently operating in the Kakheti region, four in Dedoplistskaro, Telavi, Sagarejo, and Lagodekhi are scheduled for rehabilitation. The procurement process for rehabilitation works at the Sagarejo and Telavi landfills has already commenced, while the relevant documentation is currently being prepared for the facilities in Dedoplistskaro and Lagodekhi.

The Minister and municipal representatives also discussed plans to establish a new regional waste disposal facility in the Sagarejo Municipality. A site has already been selected, and the technical department of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia is currently conducting a technical assessment of the site.

The Deputies of the Minister, Mr Solomon Pavliashvili and Mr Giorgi Tskrialashvili, as well as Mr Mikheil Gogolidze, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, attended the meeting.
