Conference on ‘’Strengthening Sustainable Management of Forests in Georgia’’
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili together with the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania, Kęstutis Navickas opened the final conference of the European Union Twinning project "Strengthening Sustainable Management of Forests in Georgia".
Georgian forestry sector to get closer with the EU regulations as well as introduction of European standards was brought forward by Levan Davitashvili at the conference, where the participants summed up the recommendations and activities carried out by the representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Lithuania, Hungary and Slovakia within 18 months.
The environmental part of Georgia-EU Association Agreement envisages the harmonization of the national forest legislation to the EU law, implementation of the principles of sustainable management in the forestry sector; elimination of illegal timber consumption and production. It should be noted, that the European Union-funded twinning project "Strengthening Sustainable Management of Forests in Georgia" lasted for 18 months, which considered Georgian side to better fulfill the obligations.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Georgia, Giedrius Puodžiūnas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Coordinator of the Eastern Partnership Countries, Simonas Šatūnas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to Georgia, Victoria Horvart and representatives of the EU attended the meeting.
The Deputies of the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Yuri Nozadze and Nino Tandilashvili, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Natia Turnava and members of the delegation of the Republic of Lithuania attended the presentation on "Solar Panels" , which was held under the frame of the event.
