World Day to Combat Desertification

  The International Day to combat desertification marked with various activities targeted at increasing public awareness was organized by the Environmental Information and Education Center in Dedoplistskaro municipality. The event enables pupils, students, local residents and other interested parties to receive information on desertification and land degradation, also to discuss ways and challenges facing the county.
  The Deputies of the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Solomon Pavliashvili and Nino Tandilashvili, Director of Caucasus Regional Environmental Protection Center Sophiko Akhobadze addressed participants and brought forward issues related to the land degradation. In this respect, the officials discussed ongoing and planned activities and implemented measures, the problem of desertification and the importance to raise awareness and involvement of young people, local population and other stakeholders.
  Under the project ‘’Applying Landscape and Sustainable Land Management (L-SLM) for Mitigating Land Degradation and Contributing to Poverty Reduction in Rural Areas ’’ the participants visited windbreaks covering 6 hectares which protect over 650 hectares and is helpful for 100 farmers in Dedoplistskaro Municipality.
  With the involvement of students, NGOs, local self-government, pupils, population and students of Tbilisi State University replaced dried trees with new plants. In parallel, the field specialist, Amiran Kodiashvili provided participants with the relevant information on the windbreaks how to design, to take care etc. Furthermore, the participants visited buckwheat plots which were planted to increase seedling and soil fertility, they obtained an information on the seed replacement as well. This practice will facilitate farmers to carry out their activities reasonably. In parallel, local primary school students took part in the contest " Environment seen by Myself’’, where children have drawn pictures describing how they see the process of land degradation. The Environmental Information and Education Center awarded winners of the contest with symbolic prizes.
  The implementation of windbreaks restoration project in Dedoplistskaro municipality facilitates reduction of soil erosion, improvement of ecological conditions of arable land and increases soil fertility. Through financial assistance of the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus), the project is implemented by the Ministry on the territory of Dedoplistskaro municipality.
  The World Day to Combat Desertification is observed by various events and marked in countries which are member states of the UN and represent a supportive party of the  United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
