The Draft Law on Environmental Liability
The officials of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture held a meeting to discuss the draft law on environmental responsibility. The meeting was headed by the Acting Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili.
According to Levan Davitashvili, the draft law is developed under the frame of the responsibilities envisaged by the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union, to this end, it considers an introduction of an effective system to increase environmental responsibility in the country. The new legislation will regulate the law on preventing, mitigating and eliminating any negative effects to the environment, in accordance with the principle of "pollutant pays" which makes the person who produces the pollution responsible to pay for the damage done to the natural environment
Levan Davitashvili underlined the importance of strict environmental principles to be introduced in the society, thereby he approved financial sanctions and implementation of damage prevention mechanisms.
The Deputy Minister, Nino Tandilashvili, representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee and NGOs attended the public discussion of the draft law.
