New regional landfill in compliance with the European standards to construct in Georgia

Today, the ‘’Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia“ Ltd (SWMCG) and the French-Slovenian consortium "Sade Riko" signed an agreement on the construction of the first regional landfill.
The Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Maya Tskitishvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili, the Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Georgia Mr. Carlo Natale, the Head of Development Cooperation in South Caucasus of the Embassy of Germany Daniel Haas, Director of Solid Waste Management Company, George Shukhoshvili and Director of "Sade Georgia", Anthony Mauger attended the signing ceremony.
" This is an important step taken forward to promote infrastructural development across the country. In 2023, eight new regional landfills will replace the old ones. The implementation of these projects will further improve living conditions in the regions. In accordance with the waste management code and obligations taken under the EU agreement, the waste management system will be environmentally friendly, safe and equipped to the highest standards" - Maia Tskitishvili said.
 ‘’This will be the first modern sanitary landfill, which in accordance with the Environmental Impact Code and Waste Management Code has undergone the environmental impact assessment " - stated Levan Davitashvili.
The Regional landfill construction works will be started near Kutaisi in March and will be completed within a year and serve to approximately 700 000 citizens of Imereti, Racha-lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions. Local residents will be employed along with the specialists under the construction project.
