Coordination Meeting was held to support the establishment of the Biosphere Reserve in Kakheti region
Within the frame of the National Forestry Program, coordination meeting was conducted to promote the creation of the Biosphere Reserve in Eastern Georgia.
Under the project initiated by the Ministry, after the feasibility study including proper zoning and surveys conducted in Akhmeta, Telavi and Dedoplistskaro municipalities, Georgia will prepare documents and submit to UNESCO for granting the status of biosphere region.
The project will support biodiversity conservation, sustainable management of forests, development of sustainable agriculture and eco tourism in the selected municipalities. In 2015, based on the research, Kakheti region was selected - Tusheti and Vashlovani Protected Areas and their nearby settlements. Successful implementation of the project will improve green economy, education, biodynamic agriculture, scientific research, rise of knowledge and thus facilitate to increase employment opportunities in the region.
At the Coordination Meeting the representatives of state agencies, municipalities, civil and international organizations discussed issues related to the establishment of the biosphere region in Kakheti and drew their attention to the successful implementation of this process, including cooperation and future activities.
The project "Support the Establishment and Nomination of Kakheti Biosphere Reserve in Eastern Georgia" is funded by the Government of Germany, Succow and its partner organization NGO REC Caucasus (Regional Environmental Centre) and coordinated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. Â
