Forest restoration project to launch by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture in the territory of the State Forest Fund in Surami

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili together with the Governor of Shida Kartli region Giorgi Khojevanishvili planted oak and ash tree seedlings in the vicinity of the so-called "Baiantkhevi",  Surami.

Last year, the phyto pathological survey was carried out in  Baiantkhevi area, which revealed, that the damage and drying of trees was caused by the harmful dangerous oak pest- great capricorn beetle. The forest restoration project was prepared to be implemented on 3,3 ha area, in parallel with the sanitation cutting which is undertaken to improve the condition of trees.

"The recovery and restoration of forest is an important part of our policy. We carried out sanitation cutting in Surami Forest, furthermore, we carry on activities throughout the year to restore the cut down trees. The forest will be artificially planted, comprising of restoration activities which were started in previous years to recover areas damaged by wildfires in 2007 and 2017. It should be noted, that National Forestry Agency will continue restoration activities this year as well "said Levan Davitashvili.

"This is the place where sanitation cutting of dozen of oak trees was undertaken to remove the dead trees and replace them with fresh oak and ash tree seedlings. In total, more than 6 000 seedlings will be planted, subsequently forests will be completely restored "said Giorgi Khojevanishvili.
90 dried / dead oaks were cut down to improve sanitation. Its worth noting, that forest planting activities were started in spring under the forest restoration project. This year by the end of April, 6,000 seedlings comprising of 4800 oak and 1200 ash tree seedlings will be planted.
 

Under the action plan, the LEPL National Forestry Agency will undertake forest rehabilitation measures on the 500 hectares of area throughout the country, including restoration of forests in Borjomi Gorge, where a massive wildfire was raging in 2008/2017.
