Conservation Agreements to sign in Georgia

Under the frame of the Eco-Corridors Fund (ECF), conservation agreements amounting to 1,200 000 GEL was signed between the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Boladjuri, Chorchni, Zanavi, Khevasheni, Pkhero and Kikibo community groups  in Adigeni Youth Center. The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Yuri Nozadze attended the event.

"Establishment of eco-corridors nearby protected areas is very important, it will enable us to protect special habitats and preserve rich biodiversity of the country. Along with the Ministry the representatives of donor organizations and local population will be also engaged in the project, I think together we will be able to protect and preserve our country’s unique flora and fauna "said Yuri Nozadze.

Under the frame of the ecological corridor, the project aims to introduce sustainable land and forest use practices with the close cooperation of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, local population and self-government.

All the above mentioned (including  conservation of natural resources and reservation of biodiversity) will have a positive impact on socio-economic conditions of local residents,  in most cases leads to the overall improvement of their well being.

Within the frame of the program, four conservation agreements with the duration of ten years were signed with- Dertseli, Mokhi, Naminauri and Tsikhisubani community groups, with a total budget of more than 2,250,000 (751,000 euros). The conservation area includes 8700 hectares.

After the signing ceremony, guests had an opportunity to visit conservation area and see the equipment purchased urgently under the Conservation Agreement signed in 2018. The equipment is necessary to undertake activities envisaged by the Conservation Plan.

The Eco-Corridors Fund in the Caucasus (ECF) is a long-term financial instrument, which provides biodiversity conservation in landscapes in the South Caucasus by means of long-term conservation agreements.

The representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations, German Embassy, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), German Development bank (KfW) attended the meeting.
