On May 14, 2019, European Union launched a new project on waste management in Georgia

The European Union along with the Government of Georgia takes measures to improve  environmental conditions, promote environmental governance and introduce the best international practices in the country.

 In the waste management sector, the EU supported Georgia to create a legislative and political framework, to strengthen capabilities at both central and local levels and increase public awareness, which will subsequently lead to the re-use of resources and recycling of waste. The EU continues to assist Georgia in the field of waste management.

 On May 14, 2019, the European Union launched another project on waste management. The aim of the project is to assist Georgia in the further development of the waste management system in the country, in consideration of the requirements of the Association Agreement and best international practice.
The project is comprised of the three main components:

• Improve waste management practices in the municipalities;
• Promote implementation of the extended producer responsibility and related legal acts, introduction of the extended producer responsibility system;

• Creation of National Integrated Waste Management System

• The project will enhance the capacity of the municipalities to make waste management action plans and set objectives in the waste management system (extended producer responsibility, hazardous waste, etc.),  furthermore, the project will help relevant agencies to introduce the extended producer responsibility system and assist stakeholders in practical application of the system.

 The project will also facilitate to the further development of the integrated waste management system and provide analysis of the national waste management strategy in the context of the circular economy and ensure the use of residual waste as a resource in the future.
This new initiative will help Georgia to fulfill international obligations in the field of waste management and reduce the risks concerning the environment and human health. The project is implemented by Danish company NIRAS A / S.

At the first meeting of the project, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Khatia Tsilosani and Sector Coordinator on Connectivity, Energy, Environment & Climate Change at the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, Alexander Darras along with the Project Team presented the project and discussed planned activities with the representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, international organizations and other stakeholders.
