Disaster affected farmers engaged in the agro insurance program will receive a compensation

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili met with the governors of Kakheti and Shida Kartli regions, chairmen of Georgian insurance company and bankers associations.

At the meeting, the participants have been focused on the effects of natural disaster occurred in Kakheti and Shida Kartli regions in May 2019. 
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia underlined the importance of the agro insurance program and noted, that this program has no alternative for farmers in terms of minimizing and reducing disaster risk and losses.

" farmers engagement in the agro insurance program is crucial and directly linked with the agricultural development, agro insurance program aims at reducing risks, maintaining crop and protecting  farmers revenue. We work actively to  improve the program and increase its scale. Ministry is ready to provide an effective communication between beneficiaries of the agro insurance program and insurance companies to assist disaster affected farmers "said Levan Davitashvili. 

 At the meeting the representatives of the bank and insurance sector expressed their readiness to examine each farmer case individually .
In May 2019, after natural disaster took place in Kakheti and Shida Kartli regions, 169 beneficiaries engaged in the agro insurance program (150 from Kakheti region, 19 from Gori municipality) addressed insurance companies. Representatives of insurance companies are already working in the disaster zones and counting the damage.

 The parties also discussed  challenges facing the insurance in the agrarian sector and underlined the importance of adding new components into agro insurance program, taking into consideration farmers needs. 

The First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture,  Giorgi Khanishvili and representatives of the Agriculture Projects Management Agency attended the meeting. 
In 2019, GEL 8 million was allocated from the state budget for agro insurance program. According to the current data, within the frame of the program,  4 217 policies have been issued throughout Georgia, 3,381 policies were issued in Kakheti region.
