Integrated Waste Management Project being discussed in Batumi

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia implements the project ‘’Capacity-building and support of measures towards implementation of integrated waste management system in Georgia with a focus on hazardous and biodegradable waste management as well as producer’s responsibility during 2016-2019’’. The project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Within the frame of the project, 5-day training was held in the hotel "Intourist" in Batumi.

 

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Solomon Pavliashvili addressed the participants. "Cooperation between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and Government of Sweden is of utmost importance to implement joint projects, to get familiar with the modern environmental approaches and apply them in our country, that will further facilitate implementation and harmonization of the EU directives in Georgia. We hope to continue cooperation with the Swedish government and implement new projects. "


At the meeting, the participants discussed methodology used by the Swedish Environmental Agency to identify inventory of locations contaminated with hazardous waste and assess the risks of hazardous substances. The Swedish experts have shared their theoretical and practical experience on how to apply this methodology. Experts introduced Georgian side with the issues related to the Swedish environmental legislation and institutional arrangement. Along with other topics, the training course included samples to take in the industrial areas as well.
