Levan Davitashvili: "We have a huge potential for selecting wheat varieties and producing new wheat varieties "
The wheat varieties field demonstration day was organized by LLC "Lomtagora" in Marneuli municipality.
Under the frame of the preferential agro-credit, LLC Lomtagora, established in 2013, has constructed a grain drying and storage facility in Marneuli. The enterprise has a storage capacity to store 2000 tons of grain per year. 20 people are employed in the company.
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili together with the farmers and entrepreneurs visited LLC"Lomtagora".
The endemic species of Georgian wheat Chelta Zanduri, Gvatsa Zanduri, Makha, Dika, Dolis Puri, Shavpkha and Tritikale "Heltopi" Rapsi were presented under the frame of the field demonstration days.
" In recent years, Georgian Government started to apply a systemic approach, considering growth and development of cereals, namely, development of wheat crops, which is directly related to the selection of seed material. Moreover, the private sector, as well as farmers engagement in the above mentioned process play an important role along with a big number of scientific works. We annually conduct the so-called "Field Days".
We would like jointly to select the right type of seed for local farmers, this will enable to increase production and bring positive outcomes " said Levan Davitashvili.
According to the Minister, the government created a legislative base that envisages mandatory certification of wheat seed. Georgian endemic varieties are of particular importance for breeders not only in Georgia, but throughout the world. This is a unique gene pool that requires legal recognition and protection.
" Georgia has presented the Georgian wheat crop in the list of ‘’UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding’’. Wheat played a great role in the formation of our nation. We have a huge potential for the selection and production of new wheat varieties " said Levan Davitashvili.Â
The Participants discussed issues related to the production of wheat seed by using new technologies which is already applied in Central Asia as well as in the European countries.
The representatives of agricultural associations, international and donor organizations, farmers attended the meeting.
