Georgia hosts the Invasive Species Working Group

Georgia hosts the thirteenth meeting of the Invasive Species Working Group . At the meeting, the sides share their experience and best practices in the fight against the invasive species and discuss issues related to the introduction of European strategy and new guidelines concerning invasive alien species .

"The spread of invasive species is considered as one of the major threats to biodiversity. Our commitment is to reduce the spread of dangerous, invasive pests. We admit, that close cooperation with the experts of other countries, as well as sharing knowledge, experience and best practices is very important for us. I am glad, that Georgia hosts an event where participants have opportunities to address most important issues, challenges and discuss ways how to deal with them "said Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Yuri Nozadze.

 
The delegates of 21 countries, which  signed the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats currently attend  the meeting in Batumi. Within the event, a field visit will be held at Mtirala National Park.


Berne Convention was introduced in Georgia in 2008. Georgian side makes endeavors  to fulfill obligations taken under the Convention, protect and maintain national and international nature conservation areas. In recent years, with the efforts of the Georgian government, the "Emerald Network" was established in the country, which serves to protect areas which are essential to preserve and maintain the biodiversity.
