Georgia joins the International Olive Council

Under the frame of his working  visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili attended the session of the International Olive Council held in the city of Marrakech. It’s noteworthy, that International Council brings together 20 leading olive oil producing countries around the world. At the session, Georgia was accepted as a member of the International Olive Council.


The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili declared, that one of the priorities of the Ministry is to promote the cultivation and planting of new agricultural crops in Georgia.


" Intensive, as well as semi-intensive perennial crops, including olive gardens were planted on the hundreds of hectares under the frame of the state support projects which are in line with the principles of modern marketing. Georgia has a favorable climate and soil conditions for planting and growing olive trees and is committed to further develop the olive oil industry. We have already planted plantations of olive trees and produce olive oil. Our goal is to support the development of climatic and environmentally friendly agricultural crops in the country " noted Levan Davitashvili.


Six agricultural Ministers from the top olive oil producing and exporting countries attended the session. The certificate of membership of the International Olive Council was handed over to the President of the Olive Growers Association of Georgia, Giorgi Svanidze.


Within the visit, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili held bilateral meetings with the Counterpart Ministers of the Kingdom of Morocco, Egypt, Republic of Libya, representatives of business circles and expert groups to discuss future cooperation issues.


The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary  of Georgia to the Kingdom of Spain, Accredited to the Principality of Andorra,  People's Democratic Republic of Algeria and the Kingdom of Morocco (Madrid), Ilia Giorgadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Khatia Tsilosani and President of the Association of Olive Association Giorgi Svanidze attended the meeting.


 Under the auspices of the United Nations, the International Olive Council was established in 1959 in Madrid. The organization provides support to primary production of olives, export, research, retraining and transfer of technology.
