GIAHS Program presented by FAO

On July 2-3, under the Regional Conference of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the presentation of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems” (GIAHS) was conducted in the city Batumi, bringing together representatives of eight countries of Europe and Asia.

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Khatia Tsilosani and representative of FAO in Georgia, Mamuka Meskhi opened the event.

In her opening remarks, Khatia Tsilosani brought forward issues related to the introduction of the globally important agricultural heritage systems (GIAHS) at the regional level and active engagement  of the Ministry in the above mentioned proccess to further deal with the challenges of climate change as well as the development, support and maintenance of traditional farming systems and biodiversity.

The introduction of GIAHS programs will support the development of traditional agricultural systems, maintenance of genetic resources for biodiversity, food and agriculture and help countries to overcome climate change related challenges.
The participants noted, that regional network should be established to work on globally important agricultural heritage systems (GIAHS), enhance cooperation and increase knowledge in climate change related issues.

The representatives of Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Kazakhstan, Montenegro, Spain and Tajikistan participated in the GIAHS dialogue.
