Breeding Georgian endemic species of wheat to discuss at the workshop

At the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Khatia Tsilosani along with the Head of Georgian Wheat Producers Association, Lali Meskhi discussed Georgian wheat crop related issues (endemic species of Georgian wheat and varieties suitable for organic cultivation and breeding selected as Folk Crop Varieties in Georgia) and drew their attention to the implementation of certain requirements to include Georgian wheat crop in the UNESCO Safeguarding – Intangible Heritage List.
The sides agreed to set up a working group, which will be comprised of the representatives of state agencies and wheat producers promoting Georgian wheat to  gain worldwide  recognition. According to the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, promotion of Georgian wheat species, as well as breeding of endemic species is one of the priorities for the Ministry.
"Georgian endemic species  have unique characteristics. Therefore, it is important to support endemic species, produce fresh seed material and deliver it to the private sector, to further multiply endemic species, promote popularization and restoration of old traditions of baking bread and ultimately to promote the development of agro tourism in the country "said Khatia Tsilosani.

The sides were focused on the creation of seed farms, dissemination and commercialization of Georgian wheat endemic species.
Nodar Khatiashvili, deputy director of the agricultural scientific Research Center attended the meeting held at the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture.
