Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili together with the head of Regional Development Service of Governmental Administration, Sozar Subari got familiar with the flooding results and ongoing works in Mestia municipality

The Minister together with the geologists and hydrologists of the National Environmental Agency flew by helicopter to inspect the situation in Murkhvani Gorge and  glaciers.
“Geologists from the National Environmental Agency made an immediate visit to the Murkhvani Gorge to study the situation in depth. At this stage, it might be said, that the threat of repeating a similar scale disaster is less expected, in case if severe drought or heavy rainfall does not continue. However, the threat of retention is not identified yet.
The most of the infrastructure survives; However, it appears, that the HPP had a deterrent effect and greatly reduced the magnitude of the natural hazard ” Levan Davitashvili said.
According to the Minister, expert conclusions and recommendations from relevant specialists are necessary to carry out the works.
According to the geologists of the National Environmental Agency, after thorough inspection and detailed analysis (using drone camera for shooting) of the gorge, in the coming days the specialists will prepare a report and make recommendations, which will be immediately forwarded to all interested parties.
“ The HPP infrastructure was disrupted as a result of flooding; However, it might be said that the area hit by severe flood practically saved Mestia from a great loss. Losses are currently being calculated. This case demonstrated, that introduction of an early warning system is important; This project will gradually cover the whole territory of Georgia, ”said Sozar Subari.
