Levan Davitashvili: The grape harvest has traditionally started from Dedoplistskaro municipality

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili got acquainted with the ongoing grape harvest process in the village Samtatskaro, Dedoplistskaro municipality, where he visited the vineyards of grape grower Nikoloz Samardashvili and attended the grape picking process. The farmer Nikoloz Samardashvili has planted several grapevine varieties on 2 hectares. In recent years, he has not faced a problem related to the sale of grape. This year, when Government has not subsidized grape harvest, he agreed with the entrepreneur to deliver grape at an acceptable price for him. Diversified markets, increased wine exports and the number of enterprises on the market gives firm reasons to believe that the grape harvest will be held in an organized manner- was noted by the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture."Grape harvest has started without any drawbacks in Kakheti region. As a result of an appropriate state policy implemented in the viticulture and winemaking sectors, this year’s grape harvest will be successful and will be held in an organized manner. This was the first harvest over the last 10 years when government did not subsidize the grape harvest.  Entrepreneurs and grape growers will deal with this issue themselves, they will agree about the quality of grape and prices "said Levan Davitashvili.A special grape harvest coordination center opened in Kakheti on August 20. So far 80 companies have registered in the center that are ready to get involved in the grape harvest process. Of these companies 23 wine companies are already involved in the harvest. About 5,000 tonnes of grapes are predicted to be processed during this harvest.The First Deputy Governor of Kakheti region Irakli Shioshvili and Adviser of the Prime Minister for regional development issues, Sozar Subari along with the Head of Vintage Coordination HQ, Acting Chairman of the National Wine Agency Andro Aslanishvili got acquainted with the process of grape vintage in Dedoplistskaro municipality.

New meat processing enterprise is opened in Kakheti region

Meat processing new enterprise Geonaturals" Ltd.  is opened in Dedoplistskaro municipality. The enterprise created within the frame of the "Unified Agro Project" is equipped with modern standards. The company is the beneficiary of the co-financing project ’’Agro - Processing and Storage Enterprises". Totally US 380,660 was invested in the enterprise, 152,300 USD is grant and 190,300 USD preferential agro credit. The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili accompanied by the First Deputy Governor of Kakheti region, Irakli Shioshvili and Adviser of the Prime Minister for regional development issues, Sozar Subari opened the enterprise.Ltd. Geonaturals" plans to produce more than 100 tons of different kinds of canned meat annually. At the first stage, products will be sold at the local market, although export is also planned in the future. At present 20 people are employed in the enterprise. The company produces 4 different types of tinned products under the brand name "Sadili".International Standards for Food Safety - ISO 22 000 has been introduced in the company through financial support of the Agricultural Projects Management Agency. The financial support of the state has given the entrepreneurs an additional push to further develop and expand their companies. Since 2013, with the help of the state, 173 new enterprises have been financed under the "Unified Agro Project".57 new enterprises have been established in Kakheti region so far. Agricultural Projects Management Agency carries out a unified agro project, is focused on long-term goals aiming to increase competitiveness and long-term development of the agricultural sector, stable growth of high quality products as well as introduction of international food standard standards.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili met with Levan Silagava, Executive Director of Georgian Wheat Association and members of the association.The issues related to the global wheat crop on the world market have been discussed at the meeting. the participants discussed the potential of wheat importing countries and trends in prices. The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Giorgi Khanishvili attended the meeting held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug related issues to discuss at the meeting in Baghdati and Vani municipalities

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Giorgi Khanishvili met with the farmers in Baghdati and Vani municipalities. The issues related to the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug invasion in west part of Georgia, as well as outcomes received after the implemented activities was discussed at the meeting.The measures taken by Georgian Government against the Asian stink bug invasion are still in progress in accordance with the strategy, although,  those farmers who took recommendations from specialists and implemented biological control of plant diseases including fungal pathogens received a good harvest-was noted by  Giorgi Khanishvili.The farmers provided the Deputy Minister with their activities and problems related to the fungal and bacterial diseases of hazelnuts. Therefore, farmers' involvement and timely taken agricultural measures is essential to get a high quality harvest -was noted at the meeting.Successful farmers shared their experience. The damage caused by Asian stink bug is minimal in the current year, moreover, favorable results were achieved by means of measures taken in connection with other plant diseases. The heads of local municipalities and representatives of information-consulting service centers attended the meeting.Giorgi Khanishvili held meetings with farmers and residents in Samegrelo and Guria regions as well.

Giorgi Khanishvili met with the farmers in Samegrelo region

This year, maize and hazelnut harvest is much better in western Georgia. However, those farmers, who have taken measures against fungal and bacterial diseases and implemented activities against the Asian stink bug have got a good harvest.The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Giorgi Khanishvili got familiar with the current situation and activities taken against the Asian stink bug in west part of Georgia.The Deputy Minister together with the head of the National Food Agency, Zurab Chekurashvili, Plant Protection Specialists and Coordination Staff members visited hazelnut plantations and cornfields in Abasha municipality and met with the local farmers.Pest control activities and precautions to prevent pest infestations are carried out by the National Food Agency through using the specialized equipment to process areas with cold spraying in Anjeli array. The damage caused by the Asian stink bug is minimal in the current year, accordingly, in comparison with last year we expect a better harvest was noted by farmers. According to Giorgi Khanishvili, the measures taken against the invasive pest by Georgian Government are in progress and the result is visible."These are areas where the invasive pest was mostly spread. As a result of the measures taken by the state, the spread of the brown marmorated stink bug is significantly reduced, moreover, in parallel with Asian stink bug the favorable results were achieved in connection with other plant diseases. Therefore, as a result of farmers' involvement and timely taken agricultural measures, this year we expect a high quality harvest -"said Giorgi Khanishvili.The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, attended the hazelnut delivery process in the hazelnut drying and warehouse factory in the village Natsatushi, Zugdidi municipality.The hazelnut picking is already underway in Samegrelo region. The meeting with farmers organized by the Georgian Hazelnut Growers Association (GHGA) was attended by Lasha Gogia, Mayor of Zugdidi. The participants noted, that due to the efforts made by the Georgian Government, the crop damage caused by the brown marmorated stink bug is rather less this year.Today, pest control measures implemented by state cover 523 villages, 27 municipalities. Approximately 420 thousand hectares are processed by thermal fogging, 44 thousand hectares -by cold spraying, 22 thousand hectares by tractor aggregate. In order to avoid the spread of pests to agricultural crops, trap and kill stations are installed in forests and buffer zones.

Kvesheti Kobi road project to overview

Under the frame of the working meeting, the officials of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture discussed environmental issues related to the construction of the Kvemo Kobi road project. The meeting included a detailed presentation on the implementation of the project. The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili and the First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Chairman of the Roads Department, Irakli Karseladze led the meeting, which was held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. The project was developed by the Spanish company IDOM. Environmental Impact Assessment is provided by the Italian company ANAS INTERNATIONAL and "Gamma Consulting". The experts of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are involved in the development of the project together with the Georgian experts, which will be implemented by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.According to Irakli Karseladze, the project fully responds to road safety norms, because of its modern design and standards."The above mentioned project has been selected as a result of multi-phase analysis, which envisages to  study an environmental impact considering technical, economic, geologic and biodiversity aspects including a comprehensive  review of nine alternative projects" - said Irakli Karseladze.Considering environmental impact assessment, construction of Kvemo Kobi road project is one of the exemplary infrastructure projects– was noted by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili.After the completion of the work, the time will decrease to 20 minutes, instead of an hour. The total length of the corridor and travel time will be reduced.
